Grouped together, the remote distilleries on the Orkneys, Skye, Mull, Jura, Arran, and one or two more northern and western islands off the Scottish coast, produce what have become known as Island whiskies. Perhaps closest in flavour to that of the characterful malts coming out of ‘neighbouring' distilleries in the Northern and Western Highlands, the rich, complex Island whiskies can be recognized by their peaty, peppery nose, heathery, spicy character and smooth, firm tone.
