Malt of Month - July 2011
This month Charles reviews The Glenlivet Master Distiller's Reserve, a Single Speyside Malt which is a worldwide travel retail exclusive.
Tasting Note: Bright
amber in the glass, with copper lights, and an aroma which combines fresh and
dried fruits. Orange juice, ripe pears and plums in the foreground, with
fruit-cake mix behind; traces of Virginia tobacco, sweet tablet toffee, clover
flowers, moorland scents. A smooth texture on the tongue, a centre-palate
delivery, and a sweet taste. Refreshing and easy to drink. A splash of water
unlocks its Speyside characteristics – pear drops and warm vinyl – and reduces
the sweetness. Now there are suggestions of hazelnuts and oak dust on the nose;
a creamy mouthfeel and a sweet/sharp balance, like Seville orange marmalade,
with intriguing spice in the finish.
Occasion: Pleasant at any time
Comment: Easy to drink, stimulating and refreshing
